About Us

Hi!  Thanks for wanting to get to know us a little better!

We're just your average young couple trying to make it through life one day at a time like everyone else.  If there's one thing we've learned and believe in strongly, it's the importance of health and taking care of your body.  Out of all the unpredictable things that can occur in this world, we feel the only thing we can be in control of is our health.

We didn't always practice clean-eating; in fact, in our earlier years we had no restrictions whatsoever when it came to food.  Both of us coming from an Asian background, pounding bowl after bowl of fried rice complemented with fatty cuts of meats swimming in MSG flavored sauces was considered a normal meal.  It wasn't until our mid-20's that we discovered there was this thing called metabolism, which apparently is a key factor in maintaining a healthy weight.

Hubby had always been very active his whole life engaging in sports, martial arts, and regularly visiting the gym, and was known to be able to throw down in eating contests with his buddies, e.g., Big Mac, pizza, hot dog, cheap Chinese buffets, etc.  It wasn't until after college when he started working full-time that he realized he had gained 19 lbs in a blink of an eye, thanks to the many all-expense-paid meals that were covered by his employer while traveling out of town.  You gotta remember, he was still in "broke college student" mode, one of the rules being never to turn away free food!

Wifey had a similar post-college story, though we won't comment on how much her weight gain was (it wasn't as much as Hubby's)  :)

The change in lifestyle definitely didn't come overnight - it was probably a 2-3 year gradual change filled with learning, trial and error, making adjustments, and being inspired by others that seemed to live healthy and happy lives.

Philosophy on Diet
Our philosophy on diet is simple - don't go on a "diet."  Not going to open up a can of worms on this issue, but our main belief is that they're not sustainable (and some of them are downright unhealthy).  Instead of trying to adopt the newest fad advertised on the newsstands, just make a lifestyle change and eat healthy ALL THE TIME.  Consistency in your eating habits (with minor tweaks every now and then) is key for staying healthy.  Of course you also have to enjoy life and knock back a few drinks and burgers with your buddies every once and a while on that cheat day, but you'll be able to tell just by looking in the mirror if you've had one too many cheat days.

Philosophy on Exercise
If we had to pick which is more important for good health, eating clean or exercise, it would have to be eating clean, especially as you get older.  When we were young, we thought we could eat anything we wanted and not get fat, as long as we worked out.  That was true until about age 21, then metabolism kicked in.  That being said, of course it is ideal to incorporate a regular exercise regimen into your schedule.  Not saying you have to sign up at a CrossFit gym or train to become the next MMA fighter, but make sure you do get a good workout at least 5 days a week.  It doesn't have to be long; 30 min each session at the right intensity level doing the right exercises is all it takes.

Philosophy on Food and Cooking
While we both have graduated from our "broke college student" mentality about a decade ago, some things just don't go away.  We still don't like spending a lot of money on the unnecessary things in life, e.g., cars, designer clothes, fancy restaurants, home appliances, etc.  That mentality also transfers over food and cooking.  Even though we advocate clean and healthy eating, we are not hardcore raw foodies, vegans, or everything-must-be-organic extremists.  You don't have to be that extreme to be healthy, and you'll probably end up spending more money than you need to by making the weekly trip to Whole Foods or the farm 2 hours away just to get some all natural free range chicken.  Until there is hard evidence that shows eating that way leads to an increase of a healthy life by X years, I'd rather save my money.  Also, there is no need to go out and buy the newest Le Creuset line of cookware or blow $500 on a top of the line blender.  If your 10 year old ghetto blender is still spinning just fine, use that thing until it dies.

We decided to create this blog to share our practical recipes for people that want to eat healthy but want to have some money left over in their paycheck for funner things.  These are all meals that we prepare regularly and are fairly easy and quick to make.  We hope this will inspire others to start or continue leading a healthy lifestyle, as we've been inspired by those that have helped us lead ours.

Happy cooking.

Triple H
